Many pilgrims change hotels at least once during Umrah. Some split their stay between a quieter hotel further out and a few nights close to the Haram. Others move because family joins them, a package changes or they simply want to be nearer for the final days.
The move sounds easy. The two hotels may be only a few kilometres apart. But anyone who has pulled suitcases through Makkah traffic knows a short distance can take far longer than planned.
Arranging hotel-to-hotel transfers in Makkah properly saves time, energy and patience you would rather spend in worship. Here is how we recommend planning the move.
Why Hotel Transfers in Makkah Need Planning
Makkah does not move like other cities. Traffic builds quickly around every prayer, and many roads near the Haram are closed to regular vehicles. Hotels in the central area sit close together, several share similar names, and some can only be reached on foot from a nearby drop off point.
Add heavy luggage, elderly parents or young children, and a simple move can become the most tiring part of the day. A taxi stopped on the street may not have room for your bags, may not know your hotel, or may turn down a short trip at a busy hour. A little planning removes almost all of that stress.
Check Your Hotel Timings First
Start with the two hotels, not the car. Find out the check-out time at your current hotel and the check-in time at the next one. In Makkah, there is often a gap of a few hours between the two.
Ask your new hotel whether it can hold your luggage until the room is ready. Most will. This lets you move your bags in the morning and head to the Haram instead of waiting in a lobby. If the gap is long, request a late check-out or early check-in when you book. It is not always possible, but it costs nothing to ask.
Choose the Right Time to Move
Timing matters more than distance. The roads around the Haram are at their busiest just before and after each prayer, so avoid booking your transfer in those windows. Mid-morning after the Fajr crowds have cleared, or later in the evening once Isha traffic settles, usually works best.
Fridays need extra care. Traffic toward the Haram builds well before Jumu’ah, and some roads close early. In Ramadan, the hours before Iftar and after Taraweeh are very heavy, and the last ten nights are busier still. If your move falls in these periods, plan around them or allow plenty of extra time.
Know Your Exact Pickup and Drop-Off Points
Give your driver more than a hotel name. Share the full name, the tower or branch if the hotel has more than one, the address, and a map pin. Two hotels with almost the same name can sit on opposite sides of the Haram.
Ask reception at both hotels which entrance or road vehicles can use. Hotels inside restricted zones near the Haram often have a designated drop-off point a short walk away. Check whether porters or trolleys are available there, especially if you have several large suitcases.
Pick a Vehicle That Fits Your Luggage
Count your bags, not just your passengers. A Toyota Camry suits a couple with a couple of large cases. Families with more luggage are better off in a 7-seater such as the Hyundai H1 or GMC Yukon XL, which leave proper space for suitcases and handbags.
Travelling as a bigger group? An 11-seater Toyota Hiace keeps everyone and their luggage together in one trip. Splitting a group across two small cars, or making two runs, almost always takes longer and leaves someone waiting.
Book in Advance, Not on the Street
A pre-booked transfer gives you a fixed pickup time, a confirmed vehicle size, and a driver who already knows both addresses. You also get a contact number, so you are not left guessing if traffic causes a short delay.
Book at least a day before your move. During Ramadan and peak Umrah months, book a few days ahead, as good vehicles fill up fast. Confirm the pickup time the night before so there are no surprises in the morning.
Take Extra Care With Elderly Pilgrims
If you are travelling with elderly parents or anyone with limited mobility, mention it when you book. Ask for drop-off as close to the entrance as the roads allow, and check there is room for a folding wheelchair.
Let them wait seated in the lobby while bags are loaded, then bring them out once the vehicle is ready. Small steps like this keep them rested for their worship, which is the whole point of the journey.
Make Good Use of the Waiting Time
If your new room will not be ready for a few hours, drop your luggage at the new hotel first and use the gap well. Some pilgrims pray at the Haram. Others book a short ziyarat trip to nearby historical sites. Either way, you are not stuck watching the clock.
If the hotel move is near the end of your stay, it also helps to book your airport transfer at the same time. One plan, one provider and fewer messages to manage.
